100th Day of School Project

THE 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL PROJECT

   The 100th Day of School will soon be here! The 100th day of school this year will be Feb. 4.  The second grade students celebrate this day in many ways.  Each student makes a project at home using 100 items and displays them in equal groups on a poster board.  Then students from pre-K through first grade come to view our projects.  Please be sure that your child has included all of the components listed below on his/her project.

   Please do not send in the project any earlier than Feb. 3, since storage is a problem.  The project may be damaged if it sits in the classroom too long.  All projects must be in the classroom on February 4, 2014 by 8:00 a.m.  That is the 100th day of school, presuming that we do not have any snow days between now and then.  If we do have a snow day within that time frame, then we will move the 100th day project to Feb. 5 or later depending on the number of snow days we have.   If your child is absent on Feb. 4 due to illness, please drop off the finished project anyway so that everyone may enjoy seeing your child’s work.

All projects must include the following:

1)  Student writes name neatly on the front of the poster.

2)  There must be 100 items -no more, no less.  Bring a couple of extra items in a baggie in case they fall off in the bus/car.

3)  All items must be grouped neatly (i.e. rows, columns, etc.).

4)  Poster must include a number sentence showing the relationship of the groups to 100 (i.e. 4 x 25 = 100, 2 x 50 = 100, 50 + 50 = 100, 20 x 5 = 100, etc.)

5)  Neatness is important!  (Watch out for glue blobs, smeared writing, etc.)

Please talk over several project ideas with your child.  Your child should have several ideas to choose from in case their first choice gets picked.  We do not want 4 students to do the same project: ex. 100 pennies.  Next week we will draw names and choose projects.  Also, please include how the 100 items will be grouped and arranged:

100 cheerios grouped in 25 groups of 4

100 q-tips grouped in 4 groups of 25

100 macaroni grouped in 50 groups of 2

100 stickers grouped in 20 groups of 5

You should not use large objects such as rocks or tennis balls.

All objects will be glued to a poster board (please do not use tri-fold boards) which can be purchased from Staples, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Office Max or Michael’s.  

Poster board should not be bigger than 22 inches by 28 inches. This is a standard sized poster board.

Other ideas used in the past:

Cotton balls, raisins, noodles, stamps, milk bottle caps, Hershey

Kisses, candies, gummy bears, band aids, crayons, etc.
